Near the edge of Red Rock Canyon and the Spring Mountains lies the major development of Summerlin. It is a 22,500-acre master-planned neighborhood that hosts various commercial, mixed-use, and residential developments. It is located over 13 miles to the west of The Strip.
The community was the brainchild of noted industrialist Howard Hughes, who purchased 25,000 acres of unincorporated land near Red Rock Canyon in 1952. Tentatively named Husite, the open area languished for several years until Hughes’ heirs decided to develop the land for residential purposes. The project received the name Summerlin (after Hughes’ paternal grandmother Jean Amelia Summerlin) and work began on its major road network, Summerlin Parkway, in the late 1980s. The first residential developments arose in the 1990s. Over the years, Summerlin has grown to be the home of over 31 distinct communities, various community and nature parks, a multitude of entertainment and amusement centers, multiple commercial zones, and more.
